Mesothelioma victim wins bet that he would survive

In Buckinghamshire, a man diagnosed with terminal cancer is to collect a second win for the payment of £ 5,000 betting that he could stay alive.

Jon Matthews, 59, from Milton Keynes, was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, cancer associated with asbestos, in 2006 and he said, had months to live.

It placed two bets, each with a £ 100 bet at odds 50 / 1 that he was alive in June 2008 and June 2009, and the third bet will earn him another £ 10,000 if he lives up to 1 June 2010.

The widower will collect his second lot of £5,000 pound prize on Monday.

Mr Matthews said: "I think I am the first person in the world, bet on my own life.

"When I was diagnosed with mesothelioma, I said the death sentence.

"I was upset, not because everyone has some time to die.

"But it is interesting that for me was how long it took - it would take weeks or years?"

Mr. Matthews stated that the plans give away most of his winnings to charity, including the Macmillan cancer charity.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "We had never been asked to take a bet of this nature before.

"But as Jon approached us directly and was adamant that it would give him an additional incentive to battle his illness, we wanted to bet him.

"Never in 30 years in the company I was so happy to pay a winning client £ 10,000 is, I believe further £ 10,000 next year to come."

Making a Mesothelioma claim in Northern Ireland

The specific law that applies to Mesothelioma claims is the The Mesothelioma Lump Sum Payments (Claims and Reconsiderations) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2008.

Time limits are in place to reduce acquiescence in these cases, specifically.
  • A claim by a person who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma before the coming into operation of these Regulations must be made within 12 months from the 1st October 2008

  • A claim by any other person with mesothelioma must be made within 12 months from the date on which that person was first diagnosed with mesothelioma.

  • A claim by a next of kin must be made within 12 months from the date of death of the person who, immediately before death, had mesothelioma.

  • Where the law considers there was good cause for the claim not being made within the 12 month time limit referred to above, it may extend the time limit for such period as it considers appropriate in the circumstances.

Mesothelioma, Asbestos, and other Carcinogens

Unlike in other asbestos-related cancers, smoking plays no role in mesothelioma development and fibrosis [a]. Although it is established that the majority of mesotheliomas are due to asbestos exposure (Buchanan [b] cites 85% of mesotheliomas identified in the UK between 1950 and 1968) - these cancers were known long before any substantial quantity of asbestos was mined or used. The cancers have been reported as resulting from ionising radiation, sugar cane farming in India, previous pneumothorax or pleuropulmonary disease and exposure to the Zeolite mineral Erionote in a Turkish population[a].

In studies [d] up to 14 fibrous materials have been proven to cause mesothelioma when implanted in the pleural and peritoneal cavities of animals, these being: Amosite, Anthophyllite, Chrysotile, Crocidolite and Tremolite, Borosilicate and aluminium silicate glass, glass fibre, aluminium oxide, potassium titanate, silicon carbide and sodium aluminium carbonate, wollastonite and attapulgite. Studies have further shown mesotheliomas due to the avian leucosis virus and to ethylene oxide, ([a]; [c]). These studies suggest it is the particulate dimensions rather than the physio-chemical properties that determine how carcinogenic any fibre will be, with thin-long fibres being the most carcinogenic [c]

One finds little or no evidence that amphiboles with a higher iron content are more dangerous. It is true that that Crocidolite (Riebeckite) is generally considered the most carcinogenic, but I also know that in Libby Montana, huge health effects are being seen from winchite (among others) which differs from tremolite only in the amount of sodium in the mineral.
